Walking Street Pattaya through the eyes of a madman

On first visiting Walking Street in Pattaya, my father said, “There is not a street like this in the entire world.” Well, he was certainly accurate in his pinpoint observation! Although I lived in Phuket for many years and we had Bangla Road in Patong, which is supposed to be similar to Walking Street, in all honesty it’s like comparing a plastic cup of grape juice with a $27,000 bottle of 1865 Chateau Lafite! It’s incomparable on so many levels.

Bangla Road in Phuket will certainly provide you with a great nights’ entertainment, but Walking Street is an entirely different beast. People of all ages, color, creed and cultures happily co-exist on Walking Street, which makes you think that NATO should use this as a blueprint to bring about world peace, or at least Israel and Palestine perhaps.

From the sandal and sock wearing Germans, and stern-faced Russians trying to decode the reality they see in their midst, to quaint Asian families walking hand in hand wondering what hit them, and groups of European girls travelling around the sub-continent together, the diverse mix of colorful characters would make this a breeding ground for the biggest social experiment the world has ever seen.

You want to buy the latest movies on DVD that have just come out in the cinema… Walking street has it…

You have been wanting to buy Louis Vuitton’s latest handbag masterpiece for a pittance… Walking Street has it…

You always fancied having your portrait painted at street side… Walking Street has it…

I think you know where I am going with all of this! Now, walking street is part of us and it is difficult to imagine Pattaya nightlife without walking street.

Is there anything that Walking Street doesn’t have? Morality maybe… but let’s not worry about such technicalities! When I glide along Walking Street in my element, it’s like I am visiting a republic that has its own rules and laws and is not attached to Thailand in any way apart from a very flexible umbilical cord and the King’s face on a crispy 1,000 baht note.

Did you know that there are over 500 bars on Walking Street? Me neither, I am just making it up as I go along, however, there is the highest concentration of nightlife options you will find in one place anywhere else in the world, and as you know, you can’t put a price on fun or life experiences… I think Lord Buddha said that one! He must have been to Walking Street at some point, maybe that’s why he decided to abstain from anything that would be remotely deemed as having a good time. It does have that sort of affect on your psyche!

It doesn’t matter how much I bang on about this 8th Wonder of the World… it’s only a short amount of time until Walking Street becomes preserved forever as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, enshrined for the ages to behold, much like the Terracotta Army, the Hanging Gardens of Babylon or Machu Picchu!

The only way to experience Walking Street is at first hand, and it doesn’t matter about age, nationality or physiological disposition (the more off-key the better), this is a street you will remember for the rest of your life.
